What do you need to do know about the new GVMS system for imports and exports?

What is GVMS?

The Goods Vehicle Movement System (GVMS) is a new UK Government platform that is being used for those moving goods into and out of the UK from 1st January 2022 via certain ports.

How does it work?

Your haulier will need to register on the platform and use your export or import customs entry number to generate a Goods Movement Reference (GMR). This ensures your goods can move into and out of the UK without any delays.

For imports, when the driver arrives at the port in the EU, they will need to present the GMR. The GVMS system will then auto-arrive the declarations allowing it to be processed and duties/taxes calculated and paid whilst the goods are travelling across to the UK. If everything matches there should be no delays when the goods arrive in the UK.

The driver will only need one GMR for the whole truck so the haulier will need to use all the customs entry numbers for consignments on the truck to generate the GMR and pass to the driver.

When is GVMS used?

GVMS is used at all ports that have opted to use the system. The full list can be found here.

What can you do if your haulier isn’t registered?

Your haulier can register for free here. Alternatively, you can contact the Chamber and we can also support to create the GMR. Please reach out to chambercustoms@gmchamber.co.uk or call 0161 393 4314.
